Hörnlihütte

For over 100 years, the Hörnlihütte and the nearby Hotel Belvédère served as base camps for the ascent along the Hörnli ridge to the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. But time had left its mark on both buildings and so, to mark the 150th anniversary of the first ascent in 2015, the accommodation was adapted to meet today's requirements for safety, hygiene, environmental compatibility and functionality. In the process, the architects arnold perren zurniwen from Zermatt, who were given the task, had to proceed with special care and caution in order to do justice to the sensitive ecosystem in the high alpine region. The historic hut was dismantled and the Hotel Belvédère was carefully renovated and extended with a modern wooden building. Last but not least, the location with its geologically challenging rock formations made it extremely important to reduce the heat dissipation from the building into the building ground to a minimum. This was achieved in a particularly innovative way with Schöck Sconnex®. At the same time, the water and energy supply was sustainably modernised. All in all, the architects succeeded in creating a future-oriented hut architecture with exemplary character.
